Does your smile feel dull or have you noticed your teeth gradually becoming more and more yellow? If you have concerns about the brilliance of your smile, an in-office teeth whitening can restore a strong, white shine to help you express yourself with confidence.

What Tool Does Dr. Koster Use to Whiten Teeth in her Office?

At Locust Valley Dentistry, our in-office whitening treatment utilizes the ZOOM system for teeth whitening. This treatment consists of three applications of a 25% hydrogen peroxide gel every 15 minutes for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. In addition to the gel, a chairside ZOOM activating light helps speed up treatment time and increase its effectiveness.

After the whitening procedure is complete, Dr. Koster will apply a sensitivity-reducing fluoride gel to help protect against any sensitive side effects.

How Does the Zoom Whitening Treatment Work?

The active ingredient in the ZOOM whitening system is hydrogen peroxide, which reacts with oxygen to break up stains into smaller pieces that can then be brushed or washed off more easily. It is able to penetrate into the tooth itself, since the enamel coating on teeth is slightly porous, for deep de-staining results that will be even and dramatic.

In addition to three applications of the highly effective hydrogen peroxide gel, ZOOM incorporates an intense light aimed at the teeth to speed up the process. The light is a precise wavelength that interacts with the whitening gel to catalyze and speed up the reactions taking place between the hydrogen peroxide and the staining compounds. This not only makes the procedure more effective but also reduces the amount of time you spend in the chair.

What Are the Benefits of Zoom Teeth Whitening Treatment?

Simply put, the benefits of in-office professional teeth whitening are dramatically whiter teeth! The procedure is safe, effective, and convenient, requiring only one visit to our office for long-lasting results.

Dr. Koster will first perform a thorough examination and shade analysis to determine if ZOOM whitening is right for your unique tooth condition and concerns. In some cases, whitening using this method may not be recommended, and another tooth whitening system may be prescribed.

Results may vary from patient to patient depending on the degree of staining and cause of discoloration. Some types of tooth darkening are not caused by surface stains and may need to be addressed with other cosmetic dentistry procedures.

Are There Any Risks in Teeth Whitening?

The risks associated with this extra-strength teeth whitening procedure are tooth sensitivity and a stinging sensation. Hydrogen peroxide is safe and can be naturally absorbed by the body, but it can cause irritation to the sensitive gum tissue.

For some people, the intense light used to accelerate the whitening process can cause discomfort as it may heat up the mouth over time. Any discomfort dissipates shortly after the procedure is complete.

How Long Will My Results Last?

With proper maintenance and dental hygiene, your results of ZOOM teeth whitening can last many years. Some tooth discoloration is caused through the aging process, however, so the teeth may eventually darken for this or other reasons in the future. When you have concerns about the whiteness of your teeth, it’s always best to see a certified dentist like Dr. Koster, who can diagnose the cause of the dimming appearance and give you options for teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures.

How Can I Maintain & Care for Whitened Teeth?

In addition to the in-office treatment, which provides a dramatic increase in teeth brightness, Dr. Koster will also send you home with a ZOOM touch-up and maintenance kit, should you ever need to re-whiten your teeth in the future.

In most cases, patients can simply maintain their bright smiles with a diligent dental routine, including brushing, flossing, and using a gentle mouthwash. In addition, regular dental cleanings at Locust Valley Dentistry are key to maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile.

Activities such as drinking lots of coffee or smoking can contribute to teeth staining, so Dr. Koster may advise you to refrain from or reduce these habits in order to help keep your teeth bright and white.
