What are Removable Orthodontic Retainers?

Removable retainers are devices designed to hold your teeth in the correct position and essentially teach them to remain there permanently. They differ from permanent, or fixed retainers in that they can be taken out of the mouth for eating and drinking. There are a few different types and brands of retainers that may be available for your unique circumstances.

In addition to removable retainers, some situations call for permanent retainers, which are simply a small wire affixed to the back of the teeth that needed retention. These are not removable, as they are affixed using dental cement. These retainers help prevent teeth from crowding and maintain a straight smile indefinitely.

Am I a Candidate for a Removable Orthodontic Retainer?

If you’ve finished orthodontic treatment, whether, through traditional braces or Invisalign, a removable retainer and/or a permanent one will likely be part of your ongoing teeth alignment plan. People may not be eligible for a removable orthodontic retainer if they need significant re-alignment, rather than retention of current teeth position.

Why Do I Need a Retainer?

Even after extensive orthodontic correction of any number of tooth alignment concerns, teeth can still shift, crowd, and come misaligned due to wear, growth, and teeth’ tendency to revert to their original position. This is why a permanent or removable retainer is necessary to prevent your orthodontic treatment from relapsing and needing to be re-done.

And because teeth can shift over the course of a day or two, proper and constant retainer use is absolutely necessary to ensure your results don’t relapse. Whatever type of retainer you choose, it’s important to listen and follow instructions for wearing a removable retainer, which usually needs to only be worn at night when you sleep.

Types of Retainers

There are pros and cons to each type of removable retainer that will affect your decision based on your priorities and needs. Both retainer types are priced similarly,  Dr. Koster can help you choose a removable retainer during a consultation about your continuing orthodontic care.

Clear Plastic Retainer Trays

Plastic retainers are molded to perfectly match your teeth’ correct position to help them stay in place. Although not the same as Invisalign, which is a process to help shift teeth as an alternative to braces, these retainer trays are very similar to the alignment trays made for Invisalign treatment. They are clear plastic trays for both the upper and lower teeth that are removed for eating and drinking.

Retainer trays encourage frequent use because they are virtually invisible to others, and don’t affect speech as much as Hawley retainers. However, they are slightly less durable than Hawley retainers and will need to be replaced if broken. They can also trap food and liquids around the teeth and gums, which can lead to cavities or gum disease. Finally, they don’t allow your top and bottom teeth to touch naturally.

Removable Retainer FAQs

How long before teeth shift without retainer?

Depending on when you finished your braces or Invisalign regimen, teeth can move as quickly as overnight for some people, or it might take a couple of days for a shift to be noticed.

Can I stop wearing my retainer after 2 years?

You should follow Dr. Kosters directions for how long you will need to wear your retainer on a regular basis. In many people, this is less than a year, but others may be instructed to wear it at night for longer, even permanently.

Do retainers damage gums?

Retainers can damage gums if they do not fit properly, which is why it is important to choose a qualified dentist such as Dr. Koster when seeking retainers.

Do you have to wear a retainer forever?

No, retainers are meant to help your teeth settle into their newly aligned position and only need to be worn for about a year in most cases.

How do I order a Vivera Retainer?

Dr. Koster will place the order for your Vivera retainers after completing a full course of Invisalign treatment based on scans of your mouth and teeth.

How do you clean invisible retainers?

Clear plastic retainers can be cleaned by rinsing them in warm water, then letting them soak in either a vinegar solution or Invisaligns cleaning crystals solution.

How long do you have to wear a retainer?

You should wear your specific retainer for as long as Dr. Koster tells you to, which will usually be about a year or less after finishing your orthodontia or Invisalign treatment.

Are retainers supposed to be tight?

In the first few days of wearing a retainer, many people experience a feeling of tightness, as teeth resist conforming to the shape of the retainer. With regular use, this should subside but can return if the retainer is not worn as directed.

Can retainers cause TMJ?

Improper fit from a retainer can cause issues including TMJ. Dr. Koster will ensure that your retainer fits properly and does not misalign your bite.

Can teeth move overnight?

Teeth move gradually but slowly after being corrected through braces or Invisalign, and even a few hours without a retainer can cause them to move, including overnight.

Can you eat popcorn with retainers?

You can eat popcorn with a retainer but should remove the retainer first just as you would before eating any other foods.

How do you brush a permanent retainer?

Keeping a permanent retainer clean is the same as how you would clean your teeth. Make sure to floss both above and below the retainer to avoid plaque from building up in that hard-to-reach area.

Can a retainer fix an overbite?

A retainer is not designed to be corrective, but rather preventative, and it cannot fix an overbite.

Can retainers straighten teeth without braces?

Braces are a much more effective way to reposition teeth that are misaligned. Retainers are designed to simply keep teeth in the corrected position until their new positions become the new normal.

Do retainers move your teeth?

Retainers do not move your teeth. Instead, they hold your teeth in the proper position.

Do you have to wear a retainer after Invisalign?

You should wear a retainer after Invisalign treatment just as you would after undergoing treatment with traditional braces.

How do I get my Invisalign to fit again?

If your teeth have shifted during your Invisalign treatment, you should talk to Dr. Koster, who can advise you on how to get back on the right path and if necessary, adjust your treatment.
